AI saved us ten hours.
So why is everyone still exhausted?
In my coaching conversations, I’m seeing capable leaders carrying too much work, too many decisions and too many competing priorities.
AI is making some tasks faster. But faster work does not automatically create greater capacity.
Often, the time released is quietly filled with more meetings, more outputs, more requests and more things to monitor.
So perhaps we’re measuring the wrong thing.
Instead of asking:
“How much time did AI save?”
We should ask:
“What did we deliberately stop doing with the capacity AI released?”
Because capacity released is not the same as capacity reclaimed.
If we want to understand whether AI is genuinely improving work, we need to measure more than hours saved:
- decision load
- meeting hours
- number of simultaneous priorities
- uninterrupted thinking time
- managers’ span and cognitive load
- work actually eliminated
- time redirected into judgement, innovation, relationships and learning
- perceived workload after AI adoption
The real prize is not fitting more work into already overloaded days.
It is creating the space for people to think better, make wiser decisions and do the deeply human work that technology cannot carry for them.
💡 AI efficiency without work elimination may just produce faster overwhelm.
